The first Olympic Games to be held in the southern hemisphere showcased modern Melbourne and Australia to the world. Almost every sector of the community contributed to preparations in the years leading up to 1956, a year in which Melbourne was abuzz with excitement. This seminar will touch on many of the diverse items held by the University of Melbourne Archives which contribute to the historical record of the Games of the XVI Olympiad. These items reflect the political, social and technological context of the period, and of course, the sport!
