The University of Melbourne Archives' repository is usually off-limits to everyone except UMA staff. But we have a wonderful time working in the repository and wanted to share what happens behind those locked doors with our curious patrons.

The Germaine Greer Archive at the University of Melbourne comprises documents, photographs, books, magazines and born-digital audio, video and text media that document the life and career of Germaine Greer, a major figure in academic and popular culture in Australia and internationally.

The Malcolm Fraser Collection at the University of Melbourne comprises documents, photographs, books and other material relating to the life, family and career of the Rt Hon. Malcolm Fraser, Prime Minister of Australia from 1975 to 1983.

Australian Red Cross collection

The Records of the Australian Red Cross at the University of Melbourne include the National Office, and Australian Red Cross Society – Victorian Division. A total of 36 series comprising a variety of records including: reports, minutes, administrative correspondence, newsletters, posters, staffing, financial expenditure and photographs will be prized by social and historical researchers, as well as members of the community seeking family history or community group information. The collection will also be used to support teaching and learning.

  • University Of Melbourne Archives 60th Anniversary

    The 60th anniversary of the foundation of the University of Melbourne Archives is marked on 29 June, the date of appointment of the inaugural University Archivist, Frank Strahan.The establishment of the Archives was driven by University of Melbourne academics in both history and commerce who believed in the preservation of the state’s documentary past in order to facilitate research. This research imperative was accompanied by the need to properly house the University’s own records.

  • AFL Grand Final holiday

    The Reading Room will be closed on Friday 27 September for the AFL Grand Final holiday.Regular opening hours will resume on Monday 30 September. To order material for use on Monday 30 September please lodge the request by midday Thursday 26 September. Information on ordering and accessing material can be found on the Reading Room website.

  • National awards for two University of Melbourne archivists

    Congratulations to Lachlan Glanville and Fiona Ross of the University of Melbourne Archives, whose articles in The Conversation have been recognised by the presenting of Mander Jones Awards by the Australian Society of Archivists. These awards recognise writing about archives for a general audience or an audience that is rarely exposed to archival thinking. Both articles highlight the many human interactions and range of emotions which are reflected in records. They also give an insight into what it is like to work with very personal records and suggest many ways in which they might be valued by researchers.

Request Material
To request material, researchers must register in the Reading Room's Aeon system.

Location: Archives material is accessed via the Reading Room, located on the 3rd Floor of the Baillieu Library at the University's Parkville campus (see map below).

Retrieval Times: As material is held at an off-site repository it cannot be accessed immediately. If the request is lodged before 12:00pm material should be available in the Reading Room the following day, subject to confirmation. There is a limit of ten boxes or units per order.
