Press and Publicity

Following his retirement from journalism Edward A. Doyle played a key role in public relations for the games and was the honorary editor of the ‘XVI Olympiad Melbourne 1956' official report by the Organising Committee for the Games. A photograph of Doyle presenting the official report is in the Stanley J Scott collection. Examples of the press blazer and sports bag used by Doyle in his role as chair of the Press and Publicity Committee are held in his collection at UMA. Reference photographs are available for researchers to view.

Nancy Dexter was a writer and journalist who was particularly influential writing on women’s affairs as well as consumer affairs and travel for The Herald, 1960-1966, and The Age, 1967-1983. A look at an uncredited article by Dexter for the Australian Women’s Weekly reveals much about how women viewed the Olympics, their concerns about and interests in the international event.
